McDonald's has removed a holiday advertisement created via AI after receiving considerable public disapproval.

The short spot was developed with the help of AI-generated video and was originally published online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience is an valuable learning as we explore the proper utilization of AI," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that can go wrong over the Christmas break, under the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Adverts that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a rising phenomenon among major brands, notably for the holiday period.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As clips made with generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also raised worries about automation in the advertising industry, with some critics stating it could negatively impact work for actors.

Response from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

She stated, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola reportedly received a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, several companies have likewise received backlash for employing the technique in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the ongoing conversation within the marketing and creative sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
